A T&TEC employee was robbed, beaten and abducted on Wednesday night, as he was working in the Couva area.

According to police reports, Shastri Guyadeen, an electrical technician, was carrying out routine work around 9.45 pm opposite Jack’s Tyre Shop, a stone’s throw away from Couva Anglican Church and just outside the NHA Phase 1 Housing Development.

Guyadeen, who was working alone doing routine monitoring, was approached by two men who pointed an object, which he believed to be a gun, at his head.

He was then robbed of personal items and equipment, beaten and shoved into his car. He was then taken to Caroni Savannah Road, Chaguanas, where he was again beaten and tied up.

The bandits later pushed Guyadeen out of the car on the IDC Road, Chaguanas, where he was found by some passers-by and taken to Chaguanas Police Station.

This was the second time in a week that a T&TEC employee was attacked.

Last Wednesday, four T&TEC workers were also attacked and robbed while they were working in East Port-of-Spain.

T&TEC corporate communications officer Dennis McComie said yesterday he was personally appalled to see an employee working hard to bring an essential service to the community being attacked.

McComie said it was high time the “good citizens of T&T take steps to take back the country from the hands of criminals.

“These despicable acts have to stop. Good people are remaining inactive while lawbreakers are taking over,” McComie said.

He added that T&TEC management held an emergency meeting yesterday, and decided to institute immediate security measures to protect staff.

McComie refused to disclose what those measures were.

However, he said the cost of such an exercise would not be borne by the consumers.
