New Face for Island Vibe

Ana Assing is the new face on the local band circuit in T&T. She recently joined the frontline of soca band Island Vibe.

Ana, a Trini resident in New York, is well known in the West Indian circuit throughout North America and has been performing with many local and regional bands. She is now returning to her homeland to become a driving force during Carnival 2005.

The beauty is only one of the many surprises Island Vibe has for T&T for the upcoming season. Ronnie McIntosh, who led the Atlantik frontline, has also joined the band alongside Spongy, Snakie and Choko.

The band heads to the studio this week to work on new tracks.

Circle of Rock X: Appreciation Awards

The anticipation builds as Rockers House Promotions and Rockershouse.net presents Circle of Rock X: Appreciation Awards ‘03\’04.

The momentous event, predicted to be similar to the MTV Awards or the Grammy’s, will feature four of newest bands in the Circle: Nucleus, Skid Nevely (the winners of the 2004 Anchorage Pop Awards), Fever Dog (Runners Up of the 2004 Anchorage Pop Awards) and Surgeon Generals.

In between every performance, awards will be presented to all the bands that performed at Circle of Rock I – IX.

About 24 special honours will be given and amongst these are the awards for best vocalist, best drummer, best bassist, best guitarist, best mosh-pit, most tickets sold and best band.

The recipients of these awards are chosen by an election in which all the bands that have participated in Circle of Rock for the past year cast their votes for each category.

Women in Art

The Women in Art organisation of T&T will host its eighth annual art exhibition at the National Museum and Art Gallery from next Monday.

The Women in Art organisation was founded by artist and current president Fraulein Rudder in 1996 with just 25 artists. Among its aims and objectives is to help women to explore, discover, develop new techniques and to assist young aspiring artists, both girls and boys.

Today, the organisation boasts of 120 members and continues to grow. It produced a book entitled Women in Art 2000, featuring 38 of its members, each accompanied by a bioprofile and a bit of her work.

Through its many activities, such as the annual exhibition, workshops, seminars, retreats and field trips to locations of aesthetic interest, the organisation promotes an appreciation for art. These activities also provide members and non-members alike, the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas, develop and learn new skills.

This year’s presentation promises to be the most exciting and insightful thus far, with works by both recognised and aspiring female artists, locally and abroad. Visitors to the exhibition will be very much impressed with the quality and variety of artistic expressions displayed, which in the past has included painting, sculpture, jewelry, ceramic and fabric.

When: Private viewing of the exhibition is on October 4. The exhibition is open to the public from October 5 to October 24.

Drum exhibition

The Carnival Institute will be holding an exhibition entitled In the Beginning was the Drum. The exhibition will be divided into three main sections: Drums of the World, popular drums of selected countries and/or regions of the world; Drums in History, drums that were brought to this country as part of the cultural heritage of many of the different peoples that came here; Drums in Trinidad and Tobago, starting from tamboo bamboo and continuing to present day.
