Grassroots
Animations
from budding Caribbean animators can be viewed at the National Library
Cinema on Hart and Abercromby Streets.
The
display forms part of the third Animae Caribe currently on at the
Library.
In
2002, the first festival received seven Caribbean animated shorts
for judging. Last year, ten were submitted from Caribbean and nationals
studying animation at colleges abroad.
This
year a record increase was expected.
The
first female submission was received from Florida based student
Annelle Ramtahall.
In
addition to the displays, workshops and lectures were conducted
by professionals from the United Kingdom, USA and the Caribbean.
Bruce
Smith, director and producer of Disneys The Proud Family was
the main guest.

Gospel
in steel
By
Avalene Harris
Although
not yet fully accepted in most gospel churches, pan will take centre
stage at Come Celebrate, the fifth Gospel Steelband Festival.
Petra
Sealy, public relations officer of the Gospel Steelband of Trinidad
and Tobago, said this years concert promises to be bigger
and better than before.
It
all started way back in 1999, when the first pan festival was held
at the Arima Tennis Club.
Following
an idea from Evangelist Harry Ramkissoon, a decision was taken to
put in place the structure for GSOTT to be the umbrella body for
the church steelbands which were being developing across the country.
The
aim was to create a forum where pan groups in gospel churches could
have the opportunity for expression and encourage the acceptance
of pan music in gospel churches.
In
Arima where the festival was first introduced, Mayor of Arima, Councillor
Elvin Edwards dubbed it the Christian panorama.
In
2000, the festival was again held at Arima, this time 11 bands participated
and the idea to host an annual festival was born.
This
year, Jean Pierre Complex will host orchestras such as Daybreak
Celestial Sounds, New Creation Steel Orchestra, St Johns Port-of-Spain
Steel Ensemble, Rotiv Sparks Steel Orchestra and the Nazarene Worship
Centre Steel Orchestra, which has just returned from touring the
U.S.A. with Pastor Leyland Henry.
All
bands are required to play the chosen test piece, A Mighty Fortress,
a classical composition and a selection of their choice.

Bounty
for hurricane benefit

The
first time they came one got arrested and, in protest, the other
refused to perform.
But
the next time Jamaican dancehall star Bounty Killer and his fellow
countryman Elephant Man perform in Trinidad it would be for a worthy
cause.
On
October 31, TriStar Promotions will again feature the duo in a concert
to benefit the hurricane devastated Grenada, Jamaica and Tobago.
Its
the free make up concert that Tri Stars Roy Maraj promised
following the arrest of Bounty Killer last month for swearing on
stage during his act.
The
entertainment package this time around however will be bigger with
some of the top stars in gospel, rap, soca and chutney expected
to perform.
Confirmed
acts include Melobugs, Triveni Brass, Sherwin Gardener, Shiselon,
Spotrushaz, Roy Cape, KMC, Surface, Xtatik.
Liz
Montano, manager of Xtatik, said helping Jamaica and Grenada was
a personal thing for the band.
Machel
(Xtatik leader) and his brother Marcus lived and went to school
in Jamaica while his father and I were at University there,
she said in a press conference held to launch the concert.
And
we have a lot of family in Grenada.
Following
the devastation in Grenada, Montano said, Machel toured parts of
the country.
He
said: Mummy you couldnt handle that.
Machel
also took food and clothing to the island.
The
concert will also benefit FEEL.
Although
the concert is free organisers have asked that patrons bring a donation
at the gate.
