KINGSTOWN—Jamaica was in sight of victory over the Leeward Islands yesterday in the final of the Carib Beer Challenge Trophy at the Alpart Sports Club.

At the close of the third day, the visitors were 227 for six wickets in their second innings, leading by 35 runs with four wickets in hand.

Runako Morton with a courageous 103 led the way for the visitors. He was out to the last ball of the day, leaving a straight ball from leftarm spinner Nikita Miller to be adjudged leg before wicket by umpire Eddie Nichols.

The experienced Ridley Jacobs is on one.

Morton brought up his century just before the close with a big six over longon off offspinner Tamar Lambert. He batted for 306 minutes, hit six fours and three sixes and faced 241 deliveries.

He and captain Sylvester Joseph shared a third wicket stand of 97 to carry the Leewards within 12 runs of making Jamaica bat again. But with the score on 180, Joseph was bowled for 53 by leftarm spinner Nikita Miller going for a big hit.

Bowled by a no ball just before tea, Joseph hit three fours and two sixes off 121 deliveries.

Joseph’s dismissal triggered a mini collapse, as Stuart Williams was trapped leg before wicket by offspinner Gareth Breese for nought and Wilden Cornwall was run out for eleven, the second time in the match he was found short of his crease.

Morton and Joseph came together after the dismissals of openers Shane Jeffers and Junie Mitchum. With the score on 17, Jeffers was adjudged leg before wicket lbw to fastbowler Dwight Washington while Mitchum was bowled by Miller playing across the line for 38 to make the score 83 for two.

Mitchum and Morton added 65 for the second wicket.

Bowling for Jamaica, Miller has so far taken three wickets for 64 runs from 25.1 overs.

The Leewards reached 56 for one at lunch and were 151 for two at tea.

Resuming at 357 for eight, the hosts were bowled out for 372 in their first innings, responding to 180 made by the visitors. (AP)
