GRAEME SMITH

SHIV CHANDERPAUL

The man with the crabbiest technique in world cricket against a man who in March 2003, at the age of 22, became South Africa's youngest-ever captain.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul versus Graeme Smith. That’s what the fourth meeting between the two teams will throw up when the four-Test series starts tomorrow in Georgetown, Guyana.

Chanderpaul will be hoping to do what record-breaking Brian Lara and the graceful Carl Hooper both failed to do — win a series against the South Africans.

It was the Windies who welcomed South Africa back into the Test arena after apartheid was dismantled in 1992.

And going into the final day of that match, it appeared as though, South Africa’s return would be a winning one.

However, in an amazing turnaround which clearly expanded the theory of cricket being a game of glorious undertainties, the last eight South Africa wickets fell for 15 runs to give the home team an unlikely win by 52 runs at Kensington Oval, Barbados.

Windies made 262 and South Africa was cruising at 279 for four wickets when Jimmy Adams got into the game, four wickets for 43 runs from 21 overs of left arm spin. Adams was in the match again in Windies second innings scoring 79 not out as Windies struggled to 283 laving the South Africans 201 runs to win. The third wicket fell at 123 and in just 25 runs later, they were all out for 148.

Ironically, Barbadians boycotted the match over the exclusion of medium pacer Anderson Cummings, so there were very few people on hand to experience the famous win under Richie Richardson.

It was also one of only two victories West Indies would enjoy in the 15 Test matches played between the two countries.

South Africa has won ten and three were drawn.

The next meeting with South Africa in 1998/9 was blasted by a stand-off between the players and WICB over contractual arrangements just before the players left for South Africa.

The WICB’s decision to relieve Lara and Hooper of the captaincy and vice-captaincy, was rescinded and Windies went into the tour, arriving in South Africa late and in no condition, psychologically, to take on the Proteas in their own backyard.

WI lost the series 5-0.

In 2001, South Africa visited the West Indies for a full tour and won the series 2-1 with two matches drawn. Hooper was the captain.

Windies returned to South Africa last year under Lara and was defeated 3-0 with one drawn match.
