“UNC dead with Panday at the head. PNM here to stay. Indians have Ramayana culture. Have faith like Sita Maataa. We survived colonialism and Eric Williams,” Dinesh insisted.

Nirmala was livid, and contemptuous: “I am neither Indian nor Hindu. My husband is a dougla who looks like an Indian. Daily, he thinks about sending Savitri, our daughter, to school with a security guard. He worries about children kidnappers are snatching. You know who the kidnappers are from testimony in Abu Bakr’s trial.

“Kidnappers are not little Indians from Bejucal. You can’t fight racist kidnappers, government criminals, with Hindu puja. You get technically competent non-racial police. You oppose the PNM-talk-show-calypso-Hutu racist mobilisation of black ghetto youth.

“The best PNM propaganda asset is people like you. Today you are threatening the country with race war—Indian youth will start killing if PNM removes the Chief Justice—tomorrow a crawling mendicant at Whitehall representing Indians!

“You are the best ally of PNM racist mobilisation, like priests helping Hutu politicians before the killings began. ‘Blood on the streets.’ Whose blood? How do you think Prof Oswujo and the black editors use your blood talk, to promote UNC or to unite the Afro-Trinis against us?” Prof Oswujo is the intellectual leader of ‘Africans’.

“You are the Indian leader defending your race by promising racial violence if PNM removes your Hindu Chief Justice? We don’t need astrology to see through personal ambition or private agenda: keep the masses focused on race. Promote Oswujo and his careerists as African leaders, and you opportunists seek your personal interests as ‘Indian’ gurus. UNC is dead. You and PNM dancing round the corpse as Panday’s sun sets.”

Dr Owen intervened: “I lived in Nairobi, Kenya. Every African economy is dominated by a kabila (tribe). Jomo Kenyatta gave Kikuyus farmlands taken from whites, but that’s not the explanation for Kikuyu business success.

“Kiambu explained, ‘We have a different attitude, like to invest and believe ownership is better than managing for others to remain an employee. Wealth is created by business.’ Nyeri, ‘We drive for enterprise more than Luos and other tribes. We are afraid of poverty, when other men give you no respect. They may take your wife, treat you like garbage. It is Kikuyu culture that explains our wealth, not Kamaliza’s gifts of land.’

“Disproportionately successful minority tribes are all over Africa. Igbos are the Jews of Nigeria. Nnewi Igbo control Nigeria’s auto parts industry, Aba Igbos textiles, and Onitsha Igbos long distance transport.

“Despite openly anti-Igbo policies there is no sector without dominating Igbo presence. Igbos are in drug trafficking. Igbo advanced fee scams earn US$100 million a year. Bamileke are the Igbos of Cameroon—luxury hotels, breweries, clothing distribution, transport, petty trading, retail, everything. Bamileke interest-bearing tontines (their sou sou) is a capital market threatening the Government’s financial sector. Ewe in Togo, Susu in Guinea, Eritreans in Ethiopia, Baganda in Uganda, and Chagga in Tanzania are examples of the ultimate futility of rabid Afrocentric PNM policy.

“Successful African tribes have suffered: Igbos massacred in Nigeria (perhaps a million killed by Hausas and Yorubas in Biafra war), Idi Amin and his Kwakwa killed hundreds of thousands of Baganda (the Indians were lucky—they were expelled, some raped), Eritreans—expelled from Ethiopia, and one million Tutsis killed in Rwanda (1994).

“Politically dominant tribes, like PNM in Trinidad, have never succeeded in using government power to undermine imperatives of culture. Power can deny, terrorise, kill, criminalise the State or increase costs. It cannot impose preferred economic outcomes.

“Racist politicians drive out the business class, provide incentives for mediocrity, impoverish the country with inefficiency, corruption and racist promotion. Converting grievance, envy and jealousy into economic policy will not work in Trinidad better than it did in Guyana, Uganda, Nigeria, Congo or anywhere in Africa.

“I agree with Nirmala: Indocentric racism destroyed UNC. Voters will not tolerate any Indian version of PNM.”

“Trinidad must avoid disaster. See dougla children with Indo-Afro parents strolling at Divali Nagar. That is our future. Whites are mixing, but like the Krupps and Siemens who put Hitler in power, they use the media to undo Dr Williams’ legacy: preventing Trinidad from becoming an Africanised English Caribbean Haiti-Trinidad Afrophone.

“We are not Indian against African in Africa. We have human rights in our country. Nirmala rightly rejects puja, or suffering silently, while rabid, racist Africanisation stupidness rolls over her identity, however she wants it to be.

“Afrocentric racist intellectuals ranting against Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess ignore lessons of Jewish history. Nineteen fifty-six whites were the enemy.

“We need love, not enemies.”
