Desire Derrick

Desire Derrick emerged the victor of the Valkyries Women’s Chess Tournament last Sunday.

Derrick, who has been studying abroad, re-entered the local chess scene after nearly a year away. She ended the five round competition with 4 1/2 points.

Second place went to Chantal Fitzpatrick with 4 points while third went to Aditi Soondarsingh with 3 1/2 points. Jane Kennedy, Sinead Furlong and Margaret Rose all tied for fourth place on 3 points.

The competition ran from June 4 to 19 and had a total of 14 female chess players. It was not without its trials. Several disruptions were caused by venue changes. Scheduled matches had to be cancelled on one Saturday for noise reasons and games had a late start on another.

Despite this players claim to have found the competition enjoyable.

This is the first competition to be held by Valkyries Womens Chess Club in two decades.

The club was formed over 20 years ago by Petronella Araujo, current president of the Trinidad and Tobago Chess Association. Valkyries was originally formed to promote and encourage female involvement in the sport of chess.

The club has recently been revived, under the patronage of Mary King and Associates, with the aim of fostering its original goal.

The prizegiving ceremony for the competition will be held in July.
