KERRY MASCALL fired in a hat-trick as matches in the St James Football League Open Division got going on the St James Infirmary ground, Western Main Road, on Saturday.

Mascall got his goals in a 4-1 victory over Showtime, while Jesse Mootoo added the other for the winners.

Ayinde Bakr netted Showtime’s consolation.

Avengers were also in winners row on Sunday, thanks to a well-taken penalty by Kevin Pierre, to beat Friends 1-0.

The victory followed Avengers’ 3-2 triumph over Universal Flippers in an exhibition match, which officially opened the season at the same venue, one week earlier.

On that occasion, Kevin Pierre scored a double, after former national youth team forward Joel Gibbon had opened the scoring.

Kaleem Young and Sekou Long (penalty) scored for Flippers.

This year’s league competition is being run by a committee which includes former national striker Nigel Pierre, Gary Joseph, councillor for St James West Wendell Stephens, Akil Pierre and Terrel Mc Intosh.

Other teams registered to compete in the league to date are Swans and Players.

The teams will be competing for a round-robin league prizes of $2,000, $1,500 and $500 .

A Big Four competition is also scheduled, with the prizes to be determined.

Teams interested can contact Nigel Pierre at 688-4002.
