The National Alliance For Reconstruction (NAR) has slammed Prime Minister Patrick Manning’s use of the Coat of Arms on the number plate of his vehicle, instead of the regular numbers.

Last week, the UNC had also complained about the move.

In a release on Tuesday, the NAR said the Coat of Arms was used on the President’s (George Maxwell Richards) vehicle because the position was the embodiment of the State.

“This is the reason Section 38 of the Constitution provides that the President shall not be answerable to any court for the performance of the functions of his office or for any act done by him in the performance of those functions,” the NAR said.

“Only the President enjoys such privileges and immunities. All the other citizens of our twin island Republic are subject to the law in our daily lives and Mr Manning, like other citizens, must use a regular number plate on any vehicle made available for his use.”

The party also wondered whether the Transport Commissioner approved the use of the Coat of Arms on Manning’s car.

“If he did not, then Mr Manning would be breaking the law and, therefore, this matter should be brought to the attention of the Commissioner of Police,” it said.

The party said the issue also raised the question of the changing boundaries between the party, the Government and the State.
