More
than 200 jumbo bags of plastics were recently removed from
Chacachacare Island by a group of Cepep contractors organised
by the Solid Waste Management Company and made possible with
the assistance of the T&T Coast Guard under Lt Michael
Brathwaite.
The clean-up crew included 100 workers and 10 volunteer doctors
from the United Nations Development Programme in Port-of-Spain.
It was headed by operations manager Kwesi Atiba.
During the clean-up, officials from the Ministry of Works,
the Chaguaramas Development Authority and a contingent from
the Cadet Force under Captain Colin Sampson visited the island.
At the end of the clean-up drive SWMCOL executive chairman
Ray Brathwaite addressed the crew saying that on the three
occasions that Cepep has cleaned the island, this was by far
the largest haul of plastics to be removed.
He added, Whenever we throw away our packaging and plastic
bottles in the drains, they do not go away but come back to
haunt us when we retreat to our island resorts like Chacachacare
for some sun, sea and sand as these areas are catchment areas
for the debris and unwanted plastic bottles that are discarded
irresponsibly.
