Officers of the North Eastern Divisional Task Force have been commended for their swift response in apprehending a bandit who robbed Mario’s Pizzeria on Independence Square, Port-of-Spain.

The 19-year-old man was held around 9 pm Tuesday on Independence Square. At the time of his arrest, the Santa Cruz man had just boarded a PH taxi. Prior to that, the officers said he was running along the same street, bag in hand.

Police searched the bag and allegedly found a 9mm pistol and several rounds of ammunition. They also found what they described as two “money pans” filled with cash.

Further enquiries revealed that the man had just robbed Mario’s Pizzeria at gunpoint. The man was held before the Mario’s robbery was actually reported.

He was later handed over to detectives of the Port-of-Spain Criminal Investigations Department.

A female employee of the establishment yesterday confirmed the robbery, but said she preferred not to comment further.

The man is to be charged with possession of firearm and ammunition, as well as robbery with aggravation.

Investigations are continuing.
