Two policemen escaped serious injury yesterday after they were caught in a shoot-out between two rival gangs.

Instead, Cpl Johnson and PC Kisto, both of the Court and Process branch of the Police Service, sustained only minor injuries.

According to police reports, at around 10 am yesterday, the officers were executing warrants close to Besson Street Police Station, when they heard several gunshots.

They rushed to St Paul Street, near to Riverside Plaza, to see a shoot-out between two groups of men.

Johnson and Kisto ordered the men to stop, but instead they turned their guns on the officers.

They returned fire, but were wounded in the exchange.

Kisto received minor wounds to his leg and was discharged from hospital, while Johnson, who sustained injuries to his hand, remained warded at Port-of-Spain General Hospital for further observation.

Meanwhile, one police source at Besson Street Station said police have since launched a “dragnet” to capture the suspects in connection with the shooting, which sent pedestrians in the area scampering for cover.

ASP Hansraj is leading the hunt.
