Vincent Pereira, president of Tennis Association of T&T announced the 18-21 May staging of the inaugural Regional/Caribbean Top 16 Tennis tournament at Tranquillity Tennis Club.

This was at a press conference at the boardroom of BHP Billiton at Invaders Bay, Cocorite yesterday. Also present were David Coker, of the main sponsors Petrotrin, Ann Staskiewicz, tournament director, Tony Jamieson, tournament referee and Ann Griffith, executive member of TATT.

Featured will be T&T’s top players, the foreign based, Richard Brown and Michael Clarke as well as the Grazettes, Ivor and Winnington, and Juniors Lendl Smith and Richard Young. Completing the local contingent are Dexter Mahase and Joseph Cadogen.

The tournament will be played on clay as a means of giving the local Davis Cup players some preparation on clay as that is the surface on which the Davis Cup Matches will be played in June.

The tournament presents singles and doubles championships and the singles winner’s prize will be US$2,500, the largest by far of any tennis tournament here.
