Senator
the Honourable Hazel Manning, Minister of Education, chairman
emeritus of the Ansa McAl Group, Dr Anthony Sabga, chairman
of the board of Trinidad Publishing Co Ltd, Mr. Dennis Gurley,
specially invited guests Ato Boldon, Wendy Fitzwilliam,
Michael Phillips, representatives of the sponsor companies,
other distinguished guests, good morning.
It is indeed a privilege for me to stand before you today
and to have the honour of saying thanks on behalf of all
the participants. Firstly, I wish to thank God for life
and for this great blessing. I wish to thank Him also for
all of you who, by your presence here today, demonstrate
your support for all the participants.
I have no doubt that all the participants would agree with
me when I say that taking part in the Guardian essay competition
has truly been an enlightening experience. Through research
on sponsor companies and by reading each others essays,
many interesting facts about the economy of our twin island
state have been revealed. As future economists and government
ministers, this information has caused us to re-evaluate
our views on the economy of this country. It has allowed
us to see what roles we as students and young adults should
play in the development of our nation, as Trinidad and Tobago
seeks to attain First World status by the year 2020.
On behalf of the participants I would like to express our
sincere gratitude to the sponsors and organisers of this
competition. An event of this magnitude requires hard work
and dedication, and you have shown a genuine interest in
the development of us as young people and as future leaders
of this country. Once again, thank you very much.
To my own parents, as well as the parents and guardians
of all the participants who supported us in many ways and
have shown interest in our academic endeavours throughout
our school lives, thank you.
Not forgetting our teachers, who have been a source of encouragement
to us, including my own principal and my GP teacher, thank
you very much.
To our friends, siblings, relatives and other well-wishers,
thank you for your support.
Once again thank you all very much and we wish you health,
peace and prosperity for the year 2005.
