A 29-YEAR-OLD fisherman was robbed and shot to death at
Acono Road in Maracas/St Joseph.
His death has pushed the countrys murder toll for
the year to 74.
Nicholas Ribero, of Greenhill in Maracas/St Joseph, who
was shot a short distance from his home on Wednesday night,
died on the way to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.
Police have detained a 22-year-old man of the area, who
is assisting investigations.
They also seized a firearm with several rounds of ammunition.
According to police reports, at around 8 pm, Ribero was
in the company of a man when he got into an argument.
The man allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Ribero several
times. He was struck twice in the left arm and on the left
side of his body.
He was being taken to hospital by relatives when he died.
Relatives said the father of one had recently returned home
after spending seven weeks at sea.
The
robber knew he had money since he just came home from sea...His
wallet was not recovered by the police, Riberos
father, Mickey Ramtoola, said in an interview yesterday
at the Forensic Science Centre.
He
had left home to visit a girlfriend when he was shot and
robbed of valuables, Ramtoola said.
He said Ribero had been fishing for the past 12 years.
He
was a good, hard-working child...He was also baptised in
the Seventh-day Adventist religion, he said.
Ramtoola said this was the third tragedy the family had
suffered over the years.
Ramtoolas mother, Marie, was killed in 1964 near their
Maracas/St Joseph home and his father, Felix Vialva, was
murdered in 1974, in Caura Village.
Homicide officers are continuing investigations.
