FIVE passengers travelling on a PTSC articulated bus narrowly escaped death when the bus ripped in two on the Uriah Butler Highway in the Carlsen Field area, yesterday.

The bus was on the south-bound lane when the driver reportedly got a ‘bad drive’ from another motorist.

The bus driver swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle on the highway and lost control. The bus split in two.

Eyewitnesses said the front section of the bus was brought to a stop by the driver while the rear section travelled in a straight line before coming to a dead stop.

The PTSC acquired 25 of the new articulated buses with its accordion type mid-section in 2005 at a cost of $20.5 million.

It can accommodate 65 seated and 85 standing passengers.

One woman was sitting in the rear section of the bus yesterday when it became detached from the front.

She escaped shaken but unharmed.

Fire Service personnel were on the scene and quickly washed off the diesel on the road.

Prime Minister Patrick Manning at a walkabout in Laventille, earlier this year, had said it was his wish to drive an articulated bus.
