Nadia Batson

I just don’t have the time to listen to any of the radio stations but I did manage to listen to sweet-voiced Nicola Bharrath on Sweet 100.1FM last Saturday morning.

Aside from learning that Sweet Lime Restaurant has live parang music every Friday after work, I was lucky to hear the sweetest song I’ve heard thus far for C2K8.

I am referring to Love of my Life by Nadia Batson. Oh goosh, that song sweet. It is early days yet, but I am predicting from now that once the live accompanying band could reproduce the musical accompaniment on the recording, Nadia is going to be hard to beat in next year’s Groovy Soca Monarch competition.

The other song I simply enjoy this Christmas is Coro, done by a relative unknown in Walter Taylor, a native of Mausica, Arima, now resident in Laventille and a member of The Love Bunch parang group. I must thank a friend, Avalene, for turning me on to this one as she’s been singing it for the past month, from the first day it aired on radio.

My other Christmas favourite is the ridiculously hilarious Drunken Master by actor/comedian Clifford Learmond. You must try and give this one a listen as it takes the fun side of the season to another level.

One setta fellas, Sprangalang’s “talkarang,” on which he speaks the entire track over the melody of Guantanamera, brings much comic relief to the season. Myron B’s My Wish is one of the year’s most endearing ditties for Christmas, while Miami-based Leon Coldero has shown consistency with another hit titled Ron.

Also catching my fancy on the weekend were Blackie singing No Doi Doi; Crazy (For Card); and, Whole Day, featuring Shurwayne Winchester and Johnny King.
