SEVERAL victims of crime came out to support the Tunapuna Against Crime anti-crime rally in Port-of-Spain yesterday.

Those who gathered voiced their displeasure at the country’s spiralling crime rate, saying T&T was no longer a safe place to live.

Among those who attended the rally at Victoria Square was newly-appointed UNC senator Wade Mark.

The group was formed recently by defeated Tunapuna UNC Alliance candidate Christine Newallo-Hosein, whose son was kidnapped and beaten in 2005.

Newallo-Hosein appealed to Social Development Minister Amery Browne to give the Criminal Injuries Act board power to assist victims of crime, who had no where to turn for counselling.

A member of the public Juliet des Vignes, whose daughter was killed one year ago, said her family was going through a tough time trying to cope.

“People are dying like flies and nobody cares. The Government does not have the political will to fight crime, although their duty is to protect each and every citizen.

“The criminals have no fear for the police and courts. They are doing what they want. We are living in a lawless society.” (SH)
