OPPOSITION LEADER Basdeo Panday has congratulated members of the victorious T&T team, which won Sunday night’s Stanford 20/20 cricket tournament against Jamaica in Antigua

Panday, in a news release yesterday, said achievements like that represented a commitment to excellence, which could easily promote fellowship among the nation’s youths.

“Sport can be used as a means to an end as the world grapples with the instransigent problems faced by youths, which include crime, drug-taking, mental health problems and unemployment.

“I am immensely proud of the T&T team, which showed great character, strength and determination throughout the tournament,” Panday said.

The Opposition Leader added:

“Congratulations to captain Daren Ganga, young William Perkins, ‘Man of the Match’ Dave Mohammed and the rest of the team, for a remarkable run throughout the tournament.

“They are role models and have accomplished something truly awesome.”

Panday said he had no doubt that their success would do wonders to increase camaraderie among the region and bring great sportsmanship to T&T.

Also sending out congratulations to the team was Independent Senator Gail Merhair, who said the team’s victory was exemplary of the amazing things that can be achieved.

“Their victory has made all citizens of T&T proud. It reinforces our dominance in regional cricket, and provides a positve example for our nation’s youth.

“Hopefully, the young will see sport and particular cricket as an alternative to the many negative life choices that abound.”

The triumphant T&T returned home yesterday and was received at Piarco International Airport by Sports Minister Gary Hunt and officials of the T&T Cricket Board, including executive members, Richard Williams and Azim Bassarath.
