Amrit Sharma accepts gold medal at Year awards in Slovenia, Europe.

BY SUZANNE BHAGAN

Amrit Sharma is no stranger to success. The engineering PhD candidate and National Open Scholarship winner copped first place for automotive design at the Young European Arena of Research (Year) Awards in Slovenia last April.

Sharma beat 285 entrants from across Europe. The foreign press touted this born and bred Trini as one of the UK’s brightest.

The T&T Guardian was fortunate to interview this inspiring young man.

What was your childhood ambition?

To become a cricketer.

Did it change at all?

It turned out that I’m a pretty ordinary batsman, to be honest.

I was better at holding a pen than wielding a bat.

Why did you enter the field of engineering?

Engineering allows you to put your intellectual ability and creativity to the test every day, while helping to improve the quality of everyday life.

This was always very appealing to me.

Did winning a scholarship open doors for you?

Definitely. It allowed me to sit among the best students and professors from around the world.

This was not only a chance for academic development, but also an opportunity to understand and appreciate cultural diversity.
