The Da Gospel Diva—Divinely Inspired Vivacious Angel—that is 26-year-old Sherma Dass-Diaz.

She’s the fifth child from a family of 12 and is a chef at the Model Nursery Pre-school, Rushworth Street extension, San Fernando.

Possessing the looks of a beauty queen or fashion model, Dass-Diaz is focused on using her voice to win young people for Christ.

About her voice, Sherma said: “I loved to sing ever since I knew myself. I used to sing in primary school and even then I knew that singing would be my life and dream.”

Revealing that she accepted Christ at 14, Dass-Diaz got involved in Cocoyea Open Bible Church by doing solos. In one year she was the lead vocalist in the church choir and was given the opportunity and responsibility to be in charge of her church group at a youth rally at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

She attended the Chris Balbosa Singing Academy and Music Ministry and did the basic and intermediate courses.

“At the basic level I received the award for most improved student and, at the intermediate level, an award for most outstanding student,” she said.

Dass-Diaz added: “At 16 I recognised my talent for writing my own songs and poems and the first piece I ever wrote was What is Love.”

Said Sherma: “Approximately three years ago I did my first full recording with Servant Recording Studios, doing Psalm 91; God kept me, Change your ways and the Promise of Love. They aired on I 95.1FM; Isaac 98.1FM and Wack 90.1FM.”

In 2006 she participated in the local Full Gospel Festival and out of 12 contestants, placed third. She also won the category of Best Composed Song with Take my Life Lord which should be released in mid-April next year.

“Currently I have an associate degree in culinary management,” said Dass-Diaz, “but I would like to further my education with a Bachelor of Science in hospitality and tourism management at the University of the West Indies.”

Remembering her support base, she said: “I am very grateful to my parents, Janet and Adrian Dass, and my brothers and sisters for always being at my side.

“My biggest dream is that one day they will come to accept Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

“I would also like to thank my husband Allister, the most handsome guy in the world, for being very supportive,” Dass-Diaz said.
