Mas in south

Primum Mobile

Tomorrow night I head beyond the Caroni plains for some southern hospitality and the opening of We People International’s mas camp, at 110 Jazz and Calypso Lounge, on Cipero Street, San Fernando.

Having already launched Paradisio, the finale of its epic trilogy of Italian poet 13th century poet Dante Alighieri’s immortal classic The Divine Comedy, for C2K9, WPI bandleader/designer Dawad Phillip will unveil three additional sections, namely Empyrean, Sun and Moon.

Boasting a hat-trick of wins for the South Queen of the Carnival contest (2006, 2007, 2008); King of Carnival (2006); Band of the Year (2006); and, National Queen of Carnival (Peola Marchan 2007), the band hit the streets for Carnival 2008 with Purgatorio, the journey through Purgatory. Judging from Phillip’s designs this time around, it would take a truly astounding effort to stop him registering another lien on the South Band of the Year title.

Tomorrow’s bram begins at 10.30 pm, and music will be by DJs Hot Rod and AR Alliance.

Coy but leggy, she models Venus.

C2K9 Diary of Events

It’s only recently I fully appreciated just how widely subscribed my annual Carnival diary of events is.

People have been asking since September when I would publish the eagerly anticipated C2K9 diary and quite recently, and much to my surprise, I was asked by some state officials and members of at least two Carnival SIGs (special interest groups).

I was tempted to stop publishing the diary when I realised just how many people there are out there who don’t give an iota about copyright, patenting or plagiarisation.

In the past couple years, there’ve been promoters in North America, as well as travel agents, who’ve lifted my diary in its entirety, and turned a pretty penny for themselves, apparently unawares, or not caring a damn that it’s actually the property of the Trinidad Publishing Company, publishers of this newspaper you are reading.

Anyway, having provided readers with a teaser last Friday of things to come for C2K9 in January, I’ve decided to throw caution to the winds and publish the entire calendar of events on Boxing Day.
